Past Simple Tense
The Past Simple Tense (also called the Simple Past Tense) is used to describe completed actions or events that happened at a specific time in the past.
It is one of the most commonly used tenses in English for talking about past events.

Structure
Affirmative Sentence
Subject + Past Form of Verb (V2) + Object

Negative Sentence
Subject + did not (didn't) + Base Verb (V1) + Object

After did or didn't, always use the base form (V1) of the verb.
Interrogative Sentence
Did + Subject + Base Verb (V1) + Object?

When to Use the Past Simple Tense
1. Completed Actions in the Past
Use it for actions that started and finished in the past.
Examples
- I cleaned my room yesterday.
- She bought a new laptop.
- They visited the museum.
2. A Series of Past Actions
Use it to describe actions that happened one after another.
Examples
- He woke up, brushed his teeth, and left for school.
- She opened the door, entered the room, and sat down.
3. Past Habits or Routines
Describes habits that are no longer true.
Examples
- We played cricket every evening.
- My grandfather walked every morning.
4. Historical Events
Used to describe historical facts or events.
Examples
- Bangladesh became independent in 1971.
- The Wright brothers invented the first successful airplane.
Signal Words
Common words used with the Past Simple Tense:

Regular and Irregular Verbs
Regular Verbs
Regular verbs form the past tense by adding -ed.

Rules
- Use the past form (V2) in affirmative sentences.
- Use did in questions.
- Use did not (didn't) in negative sentences.

Past Simple vs Present Perfect

Use the Past Simple when the time is finished or mentioned.
