Past Perfect Tense

The Past Perfect Tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another action or time in the past.

It is formed using had + past participle (V3).

Affirmative Sentence

Subject + had + Past Participle (V3) + Object

When to Use the Past Perfect Tense

1. One Action Happened Before Another Past Action

The earlier action takes the Past Perfect, while the later action takes the Past Simple.

Examples

• I had finished my homework before my friends arrived.
• She had gone home when I called.
• They had eaten before the meeting started.

2. Before a Specific Time in the Past

Use the Past Perfect to show that an action was completed before a particular moment in the past.

• By 8 p.m., we had completed the project.
