Present Continuous Tense

The Present Continuous Tense (also called the Present Progressive Tense) is used to describe actions happening now, temporary situations, changing situations, and planned future events.

It is formed using the present tense of the verb "be" (am, is, are) + the present participle (verb + ing).

When to Use the Present Continuous Tense

1. Actions Happening Right Now

Use the Present Continuous for actions taking place at the moment of speaking.

Examples

  • She is talking on the phone.
  • The children are playing outside.
  • I am writing an email.

2. Temporary Situations

Use it for situations that are temporary.

Examples

  • I am living in Dhaka for a few months.
  • She is working on a new project.
  • They are staying at a hotel.

3. Changing Situations

Use it to describe things that are changing over time.

Examples

  • The weather is getting colder.
  • Technology is improving rapidly.
  • The population is increasing.

4. Planned Future Arrangements

Use it for fixed future plans.

Examples

  • We are visiting Cox's Bazar next week.
  • She is meeting her teacher tomorrow.
  • They are flying to Singapore on Friday.

5. Repeated Actions with "Always"

When used with always, it often expresses annoyance or criticism.

Examples

  • He is always losing his keys.
  • She is always complaining.

Signal Words

These words commonly appear with the Present Continuous Tense.

Spelling Rules for -ing Forms

Add -ing

Most verbs simply take -ing.

If the verb ends in e, remove it before adding -ing.

Verbs Not Normally Used in the Continuous Form

Some verbs usually describe states, not actions.

Common stative verbs:

  • know
  • believe
  • understand
  • love
  • hate
  • like
  • want
  • need
  • own
  • remember

Correct:

  • I know the answer.
  • She likes chocolate.

Incorrect:

  • I am knowing the answer. ❌
  • She is liking chocolate. ❌

Rules

  • Use am with I.
  • Use is with he, she, it.
  • Use are with you, we, they.
  • Always use the verb + ing form.
  • Do not use the Present Continuous with most stative verbs.
