Past Continuous Tense
The Past Continuous Tense (also called the Past Progressive Tense) is used to describe an action that was in progress at a particular time in the past. It is also used to describe two actions happening at the same time, or an action that was interrupted by another action.
It is formed using was/were + verb + ing.

When to Use the Past Continuous Tense
1. An Action in Progress at a Specific Time in the Past
Examples
- At 9 p.m., I was studying.
- She was watching television at that time.
- They were having dinner at 8 o'clock.
2. Two Actions Happening at the Same Time
Use the Past Continuous for two actions that were happening simultaneously.
Examples
- I was reading while my brother was watching TV.
- They were singing while we were dancing.
- She was cooking as her mother was cleaning.
3. An Interrupted Action
Use the Past Continuous for the longer action and the Past Simple for the shorter action.
Examples
- I was sleeping when the phone rang.
- They were playing football when it started to rain.
- She was driving when she saw the accident.
4. Background Information in Stories
The Past Continuous helps describe the setting or background.

Rules
- Use was with singular subjects and I.
- Use were with plural subjects and you.
- Always use verb + ing.
- The Past Continuous is often used with the Past Simple.
