IELTS Writing and Speaking are scored on four criteria; one of them — Grammatical Range and Accuracy — carries 25% of your band. Aim for a mix of correct simple, compound, and complex sentences.
What Examiners Look For
- A variety of structures (not just simple sentences).
- Accurate tenses.
- Correct articles and prepositions.
- Proper subject-verb agreement.
- Meaningful use of linking words.
High-Impact Grammar Points
1. Use Complex Sentences
Use subordinate clauses with although, because, while, since, if, when, which, that.
- Although the economy has grown, income inequality remains high.
- Working from home, which has become common, offers flexibility.
2. Master Conditionals
- Zero: If water reaches 100°C, it boils.
- First: If governments invest in education, literacy will rise.
- Second: If I were the minister, I would reform the system.
- Third: If they had prepared, they would have succeeded.
3. Use Passive Voice Appropriately
In Writing Task 1 and academic Task 2, passive voice sounds objective.
- The graph is dominated by three factors.
- Measures should be taken to reduce pollution.
4. Use a Range of Tenses
In Task 1 describing trends: past simple, present perfect, and future forms.
- Sales rose sharply in 2020.
- Since then, they have declined steadily.
5. Use Nominalization (Academic Style)
Turn verbs into nouns to sound formal.
- People pollute the environment → The pollution of the environment is a serious problem.

7. Articles
- Use the for specific things: the government, the environment.
- No article for uncountable/plural in general: Education is important.

Sample Complex Sentence for Task 2
Although governments have introduced strict laws to reduce air pollution, the number of vehicles on the road continues to rise, which suggests that individual behaviour must also change.
This one sentence uses: contrast, present perfect, present continuous, relative clause, modal — a band-7+ structure.
