Subject-Verb Agreement (সাবজেক্ট-ভার্ব এগ্রিমেন্ট)

Subject-Verb Agreement (যাকে গ্রামারের ভাষায় Concord বলা হয়) হলো বাক্যের Subject-এর Number (একবচন/বহুবচন) এবং Person (১ম, ২য়, ৩য়) অনুযায়ী সঠিক Verb বাছাই করার নিয়ম।

• Singular Subject → Singular Verb (is, was, has, plays, reads)
• Plural Subject → Plural Verb (are, were, have, play, read)

১. মৌলিক ও জটিল নিয়মসমূহ (Core & Advanced Rules)

Rule 1: 'And' দ্বারা যুক্ত Subject

সাধারণত 'And' দ্বারা দুই বা ততোধিক Singular Noun যুক্ত হলে Verb-টি Plural হয়।

• Rahim and Karim are (not is) good friends.

কিন্তু ব্যতিক্রম ১ (একই বস্তু বা ধারণা প্রকাশ করলে): যদি 'And' দ্বারা যুক্ত দুই Noun মিলে একটিমাত্র একক খাদ্য, ধারণা বা পদ নির্দেশ করে, তবে Verb Singular হয়।

• Bread and butter is my favorite breakfast.
• Slow and steady wins the race.
• Rice and curry is wholesome food.

ব্যতিক্রম ২ (একই ব্যক্তিকে নির্দেশ করলে): যদি ১ম Noun-এর পূর্বে 'The' থাকে এবং ২য় Noun-এর পূর্বে 'The' না থাকে, তবে একজন ব্যক্তিকেই বোঝায় (Singular Verb)। কিন্তু দুটির পূর্বেই 'The' থাকলে দুজন ভিন্ন ব্যক্তি (Plural Verb)।

• The Headmaster and Secretary was present in the meeting. (একজনই ব্যক্তি)
• The Headmaster and the Secretary were present in the meeting. (দুজন পৃথক ব্যক্তি)

Rule 2: "Along with", "Together with", "As well as", "Accompanied by"

যখন দুটি Subject as well as, along with, together with, accompanied by, with, in addition to, including দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়, তখন প্রথম Subject অনুযায়ী Verb নির্ধারিত হয়।

উদাহরণ:

• The chairman along with his members was (not were) present. (১ম Subject 'The chairman' singular)
• The students as well as the teacher are going on a picnic. (১ম Subject 'The students' plural)

Rule 3: "Either...or", "Neither...nor", "Not only...but also"

যখন দুটি Subject either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়, তখন নিকটবর্তী (২য়) Subject অনুযায়ী Verb নির্ধারিত হয়।

উদাহরণ:

• Neither Rahim nor his friends are (agrees with friends) coming.
• Either they or he is (agrees with he) guilty.

Rule 4: Indefinite Pronouns (অনির্দিষ্ট সর্বনাম)

each, every, everyone, everybody, someone, somebody, nobody, no one, anyone, anybody, either, neither — এগুলো সব সময় Singular Subject হিসেবে গণ্য হয় এবং এদের পর Singular Verb বসে।

উদাহরণ:

• Each of the boys has (not have) received a gift.
• Everyone is (not are) responsible for this mistake.
• Neither of the two options is correct.

Rule 5: ভগ্নাংশ ও শতাংশ (Fractions & Percentages)

One-third of, two-thirds of, three-fourths of, 50% of, rest of, most of ইত্যাদি থাকলে:

• এর পরের Noun-টি Uncountable/Singular হলে Verb Singular।
• এর পরের Noun-টি Plural Countable হলে Verb Plural।

উদাহরণ:

• One-third of the work has been completed. (work uncountable)
• Two-thirds of the students are present today. (students plural)

Rule 6: Collective Nouns (সমষ্টিবাচক বিশেষ্য)

committee, jury, team, class, audience, family, government

• যখন পুরো দল এককভাবে (As a single unit) কাজ করে → Singular Verb
• যখন দলের সদস্যরা পৃথক মতামত (Divided opinion) ব্যক্ত করে → Plural Verb (Noun of Multitude)

উদাহরণ:

• The committee has submitted its report unanimously.
• The jury were divided in their opinions.

Rule 7: দূরত্ব, সময়, ওজন ও টাকা (Distance, Time, Money)

নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণ দূরত্ব, সময়, অর্থ বা ওজন যদি একটি একক সমষ্টি হিসেবে প্রকাশ পায়, তবে দেখতে plural মনে হলেও Verb Singular হবে।

উদাহরণ:

• Ten kilometers is a long distance to walk.
• Fifty thousand taka is a large amount of money.
• Forty years is a long time.

Rule 8: দেখতে Plural কিন্তু অর্থে Singular (Physics, News, Mathematics)

news, physics, mathematics, ethics, politics, economics, statistics, gallows, wages — এই Noun-গুলোর শেষে 's' থাকলেও এগুলো Singular এবং এদের পর Singular Verb বসে।

উদাহরণ:

• Mathematics is my favorite subject.
• No news is good news.

Rule 9: জোড়া বস্তু (Pairs: Scissors, Trousers, Spectacles)

scissors, trousers, glasses, spectacles, shorts, pliers, pants — এগুলো সবসময় Plural Verb গ্রহণ করে।

• My trousers are dirty.
• The scissors are sharp.

(নোট: কিন্তু এদের পূর্বে 'a pair of' যুক্ত হলে Singular Verb হয়। যেমন: A pair of scissors is on the table.)

Rule 10: "A number of" vs. "The number of"

• A number of + Plural Noun → Plural Verb (অর্থ: অনেক)
• The number of + Plural Noun → Singular Verb (অর্থ: নির্দিষ্ট সংখ্যা)

উদাহরণ:

• A number of students were absent yesterday.
• The number of absent students is increasing.
